We have been hard at the salmon fishing for the past few days and we are quickly filling the freezer and the cooler with king and coho. We caught two kings and five coho in Puffin Bay and are enjoying wonderful seafood dinners at night. Carolyn even managed to catch a fish! The smallest coho pictured here is 23 inches so that gives some perspective to size - the big one (king) was 22 lbs.

After a hard day of fishing and cruising, a girl just needs a little rest. Looks like these ladies both had the same idea!

We love Gut Bay - for both its beauty and its bounty. We always catch a record number of prawns here and enjoy the unbelievable beauty of this Baranoff Island anchorage.

The girls were fishing off the aft deck and caught a small junk fish which we threw back. Unfortunately, it didn't survive, but the circle of life took care of our dilemma. Soon after we tossed the fish back, an eagle on shore near our boat spotted the fish and swooped down to retrieve it for dinner. We were watching the entire process and David captured some amazing photos.

Here is a cool shot taken from the plane - it shows us at anchor in Cannery Cove - Alyeska is the larger boat. An interesting note about Doug's plane - he bought it in disrepair after it had been used in the making of the Harrison Ford movie "Six Nights and Seven Days" where he crashed in a Beaver airplane. Doug took 6 years to restore it to pristine condition.

A Special Visit

A Special Visit

Sorry we've not blogged lately but we have been having way too much fun. Our friends, Fred & Carolyn, from San Juan Island are visiting for two weeks and we are busy cruising, fishing, and crabbing. We had a fabulous visit from our friends Dick & Sue, who along with their friends, Doug and Robbie, flew over from Sitka on Doug's Beaver floatplane. That was certainly a first for us, having a gorgeous plane tied up to us - what a first class tender! (We wish!) They came all the way over to join us for a feast of fresh king crab and prawns. We were treated to a spectacular aerial tour of Gambier and Pybus bays. It was so cool to see from the air the spots we had been visiting by sea.

Alyeska 2006: Alaska Travel

Our friend, Glendae, had to return to Atlanta a few days early due to a business emergency. Since we were out in the hinterlands of SE Alaska, the only way she could quickly get to an airport was via charter float plane. We were concerned that she would be able to get out since the weather was pretty lousy. The pilot arrived in near minimum visibility weather and loaded her up for the flight to Juneau. All was well and she even got to do a little sightseeing by air as the weather began to improve nearer to Juneau.

Fire On The Mountain

Fire On The Mountain

We had a most incredible sunset last night at our anchorage. The sky turned a gorgeous flame orange and pink and the reflections off the water and surrounding mountains were amazing. Right across our anchorage is a large glacier field in the mountains. The reflection of the sunset made it look like lava was flowing. Every boat in our anchorage had people on deck snapping photos. You don't get to see sights like this just anywhere. Or as the Captain would say - what a million dollar view!
